So, you’re the type of person who has always taken pride in your fitness. Like most, you may not have time but you always make the time for your health and fitness.

Whatever your pleasure:  running, cycling, swimming or all of the above, you do it because you love it and because you know your body will be stronger for it.  It enables you to get the most out of life and do so with higher energy, less weight and feeling generally healthy.

Here’s what you may not know...

Constant over training and even periodic but more ‘intense’ workouts can kick down the protective walls of our immune system – especially in the few hours following an intense workout.

In fact, one study on runners of the Los Angeles Marathon showed that the competitors in the race were 6 times more likely to get sick than people who did not run. 1

As you read this you are probably asking yourself:

“How would I know when I’m putting extra stress on my body/immune system?”

It would be great if when exercising, an alarm would sound as soon as we were about to cross the threshold into a stressed physical state.  Unfortunately, the indicators are not so clear and there is plenty of grey area.

Here’s a rule of thumb:

If you are forced to breathe through your mouth instead of your nose while exercising, you are likely putting some stress on your system.

In other words, if you can’t comfortably hold a conversation while walking, jogging or biking, there’s a good chance your immune system’s protective barrier is at risk of being weakened.

 Why does this happen?

When our bodies are pushed to extremes during strenuous exercise, excessive amounts of cortisol and adrenaline are produced (chemicals that raise our blood pressure and cholesterol levels).

The number of lymphocytes we have (cells that constantly fight health battles for us) also decreases.  What happens then is our immune system becomes suppressed, leaving our body vulnerable to the attack of infections, disease, colds and flues - some researchers would even suggest it contributes to cases of tumours and cancer.

Tips to Strengthen Your Immune Shield

  • Do moderate exercise (keeping ‘nose-breathing’ in mind)
  • Have freshly squeezed lemon juice (mixed with foods/drinks)
  • Take in regular doses of fresh, raw herbs & essential oils
  • Drink lots of water (8 glasses being the standard rule)
  • Consistently get a full night’s sleep
  • Eliminate sugar from your diet
  • Buy lots of raw, organic fruits & vegetables to eat (berries, broccoli, seaweed...)

Doing a combination of these things would definitely begin to strengthen the immune system.

The Ugly Reality:  Why These Tips Often Don’t Work...

If you’re anything like me, you probably do a few of those things already.  You probably woke up early to jog this morning, had a fruit-smoothie for breakfast and packed plenty of veggies for lunch.  You do more than most people are willing to do in an attempt to stay fit and healthy.

But, between stressful work days & travel schedules, working around the house and running kids from one place to another – we are busy!  5 runs per week might turn into 3 and a full 8 hours of sleep happens rarely, if at all.  Despite the odd indulgence, we do eat healthy but almost never have time or energy to hunt down all the right foods and supplements.

So, despite our best efforts, long and complex recipes for health often don’t work because they aren’t reasonable to maintain for the long-term.
