It seems like everyone is getting into yoga these days. What are the reasons? There are many benefits to doing health. se days. this ancient Indian exercise that most people, even many who practise it, may not realize.
- Posture – Yoga requires constant attention to posture. Your instructor will often be guiding you in this practise. Through repetition comes habit and you will start to notice yourself paying better attention to posture in your day-to-day life.
- Breathing – We breathe all day, every day but often forget how important it is. Controlled breathing is an important part of yoga – you’ll be taught the correct ways to do it and find that you will be more relaxed, have higher energy and lower levels of stress.
- Flexibility – One of the more obvious benefits of yoga is that it increases your flexibility. Yoga is very much about stretching the muscles. In pictures or videos you may see some very flexible individuals doing things that you would normally expect to see in a gymnastics competition – don’t let this scare you. In reality, people begin at all levels of flexibility. The key is being aware of what your own capabilities and striving to improve.
- Strength – In yoga there are no weights to lift or medicine balls to throw around. But make no mistake - strength and muscle are built as you are required to support your own weight and often move slowly from one pose to another. All of this tones the muscles and builds strength to individual parts and the core.
- Aches and Pains – Since yoga increases oxygen-flow to the blood, promotes circulation and massages the organs, the result is an overall sense of well-being. You’ll begin to see common aches and pains (joints, back, etc.) disappear.
- Stress Reduction – Just getting involved in a session of yoga will automatically take your mind off of whatever might be stressful in your life. You’ll be forced to concentrate on your breathing...which itself is proven to reduce levels of stress.
